What is Google Hangouts (Classic)?

Google Hangouts is a communication platform that includes messaging, voice, VoIP, and video call capabilities. This platform is part of Google’s G Suite offering and integrates with applications such as Gmail and Google+. Pricing for G Suite plans range from $5-$25 per user per month.

Callers can use Hangouts to:

  • Start a chat conversation or video call.
  • Make phone calls using Wi-Fi or data.
  • Send text messages with a Google Voice or Google Fi phone number.

Hangouts sync automatically across devices. Hangouts started on a computer, can continue with chat on another device, like a phone.

  • In March 2017, Google announced plans to evolve classic Hangouts to focus on two experiences designed to help bring teams together: Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet. Both Chat and Meet are available for G Suite customers and will be made available for consumer users as well. Google is planning to transition users from classic Hangouts to Chat and Meet after June 2020.

Google Hangouts (Classic) was used by a particularly small team in our organization, where we needed more of a legacy solution for a well-known client so that they could feel comfortable. It was the perfect communication tool since we already had a long-term relation, so using Hangouts was organic, simply moved our conversations from email to easy-to-find chats or calls.
  • Easy to find frequent contacts
  • Light calls
  • Fast chats
  • Handling multiple work-spaces
  • Handling multiple accounts in the same window
I think the only scenario where Google Hangouts (Classic) is the best solution is where there are individuals that do not handle change very well, since there are multiple more modern and sophisticated tools, full of new features. Performance-wise, it is difficult to beat Hangouts, but that is also given the low amount of features.

We have been using Google Hangouts within our company for interaction with clients & colleagues. It's being widely used within our KPO segment for the purpose of internal meetings & also sometimes for interaction with our clients. Since we are in a google ecosystem where all the applications we use are mainly from G-suite, it was very natural that would use google hangouts as our instant messaging platform.
  • Easy to setup platform especially if the organization is already in Google ecosystem.
  • User interface is very easy on the eye & minimalistic.
  • All the Gmail events are properly synced up with google hangout.
  • Very good & versatile mobile application.
  • Call & video quality connection becomes very unstable when on low latency network.
  • Could improve on its sending invite option & make it more easy.
  • Automatic away status can be implemented if not active on platform.
This tool is best suited for the organization that's already working with a google driven ecosystem wherein they use all the web-based google applications. Google Hangouts doesn't present a high level of encryption & lacks some advanced features that are present in other tools. Overall a decent tool for instant messaging within the company for internal purposes.

Google Hangouts was used across our organization, both for internal meeting purposes, as well as client-facing calls. It was a quick and easy solution (especially since our email is powered by Gmail) that allowed us to quickly connect with audio and video conferencing, with very few cases of technical issues.
  • Audio Connection
  • Video Connection
  • Ability to quickly invite others
  • Ability to Chat
  • Tile layout for headshots used to be a tricky item
  • I don't believe it had a recording capability in years past
  • Conversations from chat were not archived / emailed to host
I think Google Hangouts can be used in a variety of scenarios, whether those are internal business meetings, colleague catch-ups, or client-facing calls. The software is incredibly easy to use and I personally experienced little to no technical issues in my years of utilizing it as a primary piece of my daily technology suite.

Google Hangouts (Classic) has now been superseded by the more modern Google Chat and is therefore not compatible with Google Workspace for Education. Prior to Google Chat being widely used, Hangouts was used at our school for inter-staff communications and well as a way for students to communicate with their teachers. This was particularly heavily used during the first lock down in March 2020. It offers a quick instant messaging service with the ability to make calls or video calls within the app.
  • Has built in calling and video calling from within the app or web page
  • Can be used by anyone with a Google account
  • On Android phones, can be used to receive SMS messages as well
  • Has now been superseded by Google Chat
  • Does not work with Google for Education accounts
  • No longer integrated with Gmail after the phase out completes
Had I completed this review a couple years ago, I would have given a rating of 9 or 10 as Hangouts (Classic) is an excellent product. However, now that Google Chat has succeeded Hangouts, I would not recommend that any new users begin using it where other more modern options are available.

Android users who want an internet based instant messaging that also supports calling and video calling could benefit from using Hangouts (Classic) as Google Chat requires the user to also have Google Meet installed to make video calls and there is no voice only calling option.

Google Hangouts (classic) is part of a series of tools that sit in an in between space. They are not primary company tools, but they serve a niche function when other tools are not able to be used. In particular, some messaging needs or video conferencing needs that require connection with external parties informally are ideal opportunities to use Google Hangouts (classic).
  • Ad-hoc video conferencing / meetings with external collaborators
  • Mobile video conferencing
  • Integration with other Google-based tools.
  • Security
  • Integration into the formal corporate toolset
  • Integration into Office365
As previously mentioned, Google Hangouts (Classic) is best suited for ad-hoc, informal communications with external collaborators that would benefit from face-to-face interactions, but don’t require a record of the conversation and don’t necessarily require a high degree of corporate security. For communications of consequence, our corporate toolset is more appropriate, but Google Hangouts (Classic) serves a similar function to FaceTime or Zoom.

Google Hangouts (Classic) is used by my entire organization. When people want to quickly connect with or without a webcam, we set up meetings within Gmail's scheduler with the link to the hangout.
  • Google Hangouts (Classic) is embedded within Gmail's scheduler, so setting up the link is as quick as a click of the button. It's a one-step process.
  • Google Hangouts (Classic) is user-friendly and [has] features to share screens easily.
  • Google Hangouts (Classic) is much easier to use than its competitors.
  • Google Hangouts (Classic) have [a] good connection time and there are few glitches.
  • The quality of the visuals is not always great. Seems like what is displayed is always dark.
  • We typically use Google Hangouts (Classic) with only a small group. For some reason, it's not the preferred choice for a long list of attendees.
  • I am not aware of background feature[s] within Google Hangouts (Classic)(for example, overlay of pictures or backdrop of a city, etc.)
Google Hangouts (Classic) [are] well suited for meetings that are set up within Gmail. It is good for screen sharing. Since it's so easy to set up, one can set up a meeting without much hassle and good for impromptu meetings as well.

We are using it across the organization for different types of communication- internal, external, chat, video conferencing and for screen share. This software helps us connect easily with each other from anywhere and also allows us to connect to individuals outside in an easy manner. We’ve used this for employees or students that are unable to attend in person.
  • Simple screen share
  • Minimal setup
  • OS agnostic including mobile
  • Works well with low speed connections
  • Screen share on mobile
  • Better chat extension on Chrome
  • Better invite options
Suited for building learning or communication, screen sharing for presentations or meetings, group or individual chats, scheduling integrated into google calendar

We have been trying to use Google Hangouts to conduct help sessions with people that we can not meet with in person. We would like to add it to our customer service options so our customers can have their questions answered with a visual or demonstration. This will enhance the personal touch and outreach to our customers.
  • We can open up Google Hangouts and have a face to face meeting.
  • It's fairly easy to use once you've done it a couple of times. You do have some back and forth with each user/session until it gets set up and going.
  • It sets up communication in real time, faster then chat. And you have the visual.
  • The quality of the internet connection is very important. A bad connection is frustrating and a time waster. And there's no way to tell in advance how the connection will be until you start the hangout.
  • More instructions on the home page or a section that opens up with answers to common problems would help.
  • The camera that each side uses is also crucial. Any improvement in that or having a way to evaluate how the image will be or could be improved would be useful.
The idea is great - setting up a face to face with a customer to share information, show a product, and build personal trust. Getting Google Hangouts to work is hit or miss and we are still in the testing stage until it gets better. We don't want to launch it with customer service until it has improved and quality is consistent. We do occasionally use it for meetings of 2 or more people because in some cases it's better than a conference call. Seeing someone 'in person' gives you visual cues and you can see their reaction that might not come across on a phone call.

We utilize Google Hangouts for team meetings and 1:1 calls. Most of the organization uses it. It does connect our team quickly and, usually, easily.
  • Click to join
  • Video
  • Chat
  • Connection sometimes the connection is dropped.
  • Sound quality and sound features.
  • Single link meetings and meeting start and end times.
It's good for smaller organizations or quick internal phone calls. For larger organizations with stakeholder calls and more important calls, a more thorough solution is needed.

Google Hangouts is used by our team to do virtual meetings. We use Google Meet more than Google Hangouts, because we have GSuite and we feel like Google Meet is slightly better. But, many times some of our freelancer employees (that are not in GSuite) start a meeting by Google Hangouts and we use it with no problem, as it is too a great tool for non-presencial meetings
  • Google Hangouts is easy to use.
  • Google Hangouts is a well known tool, so most people already know how to use it.
  • Usually I don't have any problems with the connection, and the meetings take place perfectly.
  • Google Hangouts don't have all the functions of Google Meet.
  • Sometimes it's complicated to understand how to enter a meeting, even one that you were invited.
  • It's confusing that Google has communication tools that are slightly different, but with the same purpose.
I recommend Google Hangouts for anyone who needs to use a solid online meeting communication tool and doesn't want to pay for it. Google, of course, has one of the better infrastructures and security in the world. But if you do a lot of online meetings and some of Google Hangouts limitations start to get on the way, I recommend going with Google Meet (through GSuite) or another online meeting tool.

Google Hangouts provides strong audio over the internet, for free. It is easy to connect on the go as well with their integrated mobile app. Since everything is linked to your Google Account, it is easy to quickly to integrate into a business that already utilizes the Google platform to maintain its online contact services. In addition to high-quality audio, Google Hangouts also provides good video chat and messaging functionality that can also be used on mobile devices.
  • High-quality audio.
  • High-quality video.
  • Integration of messaging.
  • Mobile application.
  • Integration with Google.
  • Limited controls.
  • No desktop application.
  • Groups can be a bit confusing.
Google Hangouts is useful for any type of user. It can be a low overhead video chat client that connects users with each other without the need for setting up desktop applications and accounts. It does not provide the more advanced features one would find using industry web conferencing software, but for a simple voice and video chat, Google Hangouts is a go-to, especially if connecting with users who are not familiar with the technology.

It's being used as "the communication tool" for the entire company, an Argentinian software company. There are no phones, only Gsuite tools, and Hangouts is used to chat, call, video call and not only with company employees but also with external participants as well, because most people have already a Google account and probably even experience with the tool itself, making the whole process easier.
  • One tool, many uses: chat, audio call, video call, interact with Meet or any other Google tool, perfectly integrated.
  • One tool, any platform.
  • Cell phone? No problem.
  • Tablet? No problem.
  • PC? No problem.
  • No matter what OS you're using, you can Hangout.
  • One tool, many people to connect: almost everybody I know has a Google account, or even the other way around, I think I don´t know anybody without a Google account, so they're all a potential Hangouts contacts.
  • You may find a low video quality comparing with other tools and pointing specifically to video calls.
  • It's not the lightest chat tool, it's phone app is rather slow.
  • The way it handles group chats is not my favorite.
It's really great with almost any tech-related person and tech company, especially small and medium-sized ones, with less infrastructure and lighter regulations for cloud services. It's very easy to deploy and administrate, and it's very well complimented with all other Google tools.

It may be generationally disliked because it's a modern tool but not the most popular one, so maybe some people won´t find it intuitive and/or won´t prefer it.

We used Google Hangouts as a way to communicate with a group on users across several campuses as a method of enhancing project management calls. Alternatives such as conference calls or webinar formats didn't allow for the level of meaningful conversation that we wanted. Hangouts gave us a way to see the other people on the call and check their reactions in real time and allowed anyone to show through the video feed items that may be hard to describe with only voice.
  • Video Interaction. Being able to see each other face to face prevented those awkward situations we're people are all trying to talk at once or when you are not sure who is speaking.
  • High quality video. The video feeds were clear enough to see graphs, charts, or text that participants wanted to share with the group.
  • Ease of use. Almost everyone has a Google account anymore so getting people on the Hangouts were never an issue.
  • Voice quality. You can easily tell who the person is that is speaking and if they have left their mic on and are picking up background noise from a certain user. I never had trouble clearly hearing other users.
  • With many people on a Hangout on a mobile screen I felt that things were harder to track and manage. If people are thoughtful it is easier.
  • I found it difficult to track the chat and the video at the same time. If people were typing into the chat window it wasn't obvious what that conversation was while a Hangout was occurring.
  • Google Meet has taken over some of the space the Hangouts previously has done for us. If you are looking at alternatives it does have some similar features and is a robust product.
I think groups of people 15 or less can do well in Google Hangouts. It is also better suited for people that can make use of the visual aspects. If you don't need to see each other and are familiar with the group you are communicating with perhaps a landline solution is easier. If you want to have a room of people as one party on the Hangouts I would not recommend it without better microphones. If you keep the meeting to one person per account it works better.

Google Hangouts is used across our entire organization. It is our go-to for quick communication and meetings. It has allowed us to better come together for small meetings, company-wide meetings, training, etc. It is a great tool and personally the best I've used compared to similar tools.
  • It allows for quick easy communication.
  • It allows for training and the ability to get details to a large group in a quick amount of time.
  • Always good connection and ability to screen share makes this tool a must have.
  • They need to do a better job about version compatibility. I had an issue where my coworker could not hear me in Hangouts due to him having a more up to date version of Hangouts than myself.
I believe GoogleHhangouts is best for all types of organizations. I've found it effective in meetings of 2, 5, 10, or 100+. The ability to screen share allows for training. The chat feature in hangouts also allows for a more dynamic meeting. I can't see a scenario where I'd rather have a competitor's software.

Since most people have a Google i.e Gmail address (email-id), Google Hangouts fits perfectly for our needs. We use it for all kinds of purposes related to quick and efficient communication and also for the business meetings. The video chat and the written chat helps us keep in touch with each other and solve any issues quickly without needing anyone to use any extra software or need to have any expert knowledge of extra software.
  • Syncs with your Gmail address.
  • Has an app to use on mobile and communicate efficiently and faster.
  • Video chat is available too.
  • The chat history is always there so we can look up old chats and refer.
  • Useful for everyone with Gmail account.
  • Backup, import chat history.
  • Must have a WhatsApp web type of dedicated website service.
  • Must keep improving and adding some advanced features like file transfer.
  • Must have some form of password lock of 2FA.
Google Hangouts is suited not only for business needs but for anyone with a Gmail account it is good. It has an Android app, too, so you can always check and keep chatting anywhere with an active internet connection.
It has video chat too but still needs improvement as I mentioned related to chat history import or backup and some more solid security features should be added.

Our organization has decided to do G-suite migration in order to increase the overall performance of all the divisions in the organization. One of the widely used application after G-suite migration was Google Hangouts. We have done a user awareness and training session before they actually started working with this application and I was one of the speakers of this session. When employees started using Google Hangouts we realized that it leads us to achieve so many goals both organizational and departmental-wide. One of the biggest issue we had was allocating IT trainees when an employee faces technical issues. With in-built screen sharing feature in Google Hangouts finally, we were able to solve all those technical issues without going to the user. Also, we have seen that some divisions changed the way of having their regular meetings. They have switched to video call conference facility in Google Hangouts to do their meetings. This saved a lot of time and these departments were able to deliver their work on time.
  • Voice calls - You can call any google account user with Google Hangouts and the quality of these voice calls are just outstanding. You clearly do not need a phone when you have Google Hangouts.
  • Screen sharing - This comes useful when you are working with your work buddy on the same project. You can see what the other person is doing in his device with screen sharing feature.
  • Messaging - You can have one-to-one or one-to-many (group) conversations within Google Hangouts.
  • Google Hangouts requires you to have a strong Internet connection in order to run all these features perfectly.
Google Hangouts is well suited in a scenario like when you want to communicate with your co-workers (audio call/ video call/ video conference call) and send them a bunch of different files like video clips, pdf documents, and text documents so they can download those files and make use of them.

Since three years ago when my company decided to change the online-based chatting service from Skype to Google Hangouts, it's been the best chatting service we use within our company. Google Hangouts is being used by various departments within my company from chatting with my internal employees, meetings, and clients calls. I personally use it to get in touch with my department, by just selecting the person I want to chat with and instantly I am connected with the person. The calls are crystal clear, and there is no lag in connection with Google Hangouts. The main business problem that I get solved with Google Hangouts is the ability to solve any issues that come up with our application, I can quickly call any developer and instantly do a screen share to show the problems that need to be addressed with our application. Google Hangouts makes it easy to use and communicate since we have G-suite and our company email exchange is Gmail, so it all syncs very well. I would recommend Google Hangouts to anyone who is looking into web-based communication software.
  • It's FREE: Google Hangouts is free to use and comes with your Gmail account through G-Suite.
  • Quick, fast, and reliable: Google Hangouts is very fast when connecting to a call, there has never been a call dropped with Google Hangouts. Installation is a breeze, there are no requirements needed to use Google Hangouts. But I will say you may need to install a plugin to use Google Hangouts - if you are not using Chrome browser, other browsers will require you to install a plugin that is needed to utilize Google Hangouts.
  • Contacts: Google Hangouts uses your existing contacts stored in your Google account, so it is easy to quick-chat or call the person if the other person has a Google account.
  • Instant Messaging and HD Video calls: quick message and call is great with Google Hangouts.
  • Group conference calls or meetings: Google Hangouts makes it easy to invite a group of people in the call and start the meeting, messaging, and screen sharing.
  • Updates: Google Hangouts has not been updated in ages and the UI for Google Hangouts is horrible. It's 2019 almost and they would think to make it a priority to update. Sometimes it's confusing to see who's online and offline.
Google Hangouts is always great to use, whether for work or personal use. For work, a few scenarios would come to mind, such as: creating an group meeting with Google Hangouts - I can start a call and interact with my teammates within my department; secondly, a company-wide group meeting - we use Google Hangouts to engage in the weekly or monthly calls for getting things done; finally, using Google Hangouts I can also instant message to share questions and answers. For personal use: I can call my friends or instant message to keep up-to-date with information and other things. The only scenario where Google Hangouts will not be reliable to use is when calling internationally since charges can be billed to you via your cellphone company and calls can drop, but instant messaging is the best way to communicate, it's free and messages will go through if the other party has good internet connection.

We use Google Hangouts as a way to conference in Remote employees (or employees Working From Home on a particular day), both with Audio and Video. We also use the screen share features for presenting screens to those dialed in. We use it in the Software Engineering team, but I'm pretty sure other organizations in the company use it as well.
  • Video - clear picture with good quality, as long as you have a decent internet connection
  • Multiple Users - I've been a part of Google Hangout with over a dozen people from different locations on call
  • Easy to setup and use. It's extremely quick to create a Google Hangout and add it to any calendar invite
  • Sometimes, the way Hangouts switches which person to show as the primary, gets messed up if little sounds are made of peoples computers (even if they aren't talking)
  • Video quality might not be the best if internet connection isn't great.
  • The screenshare can be a bit buggy sometimes. Meaning the screen might lag or freeze for a little.
It works well when you have multiple people dialing in from different locations. Whether you need Chat Messaging, Audio, Video, and/or screenshare features, Google Hangouts can be very suitable. There are also some fun add-ons like filters, which can be entertaining when using for personal use in a less professional setting.

I use Hangouts every day to communicate with a person I work with, for all communications on running and maintaining a guest house that can accommodate as many as 14 guests at a time. I and the co-worker discuss and solve daily trouble shooting, such as appliances being broken or repairing something, ordering something, as well as debating what to order and other guest issues. We used to use email and texting, but we switched to Hangouts for the convenience of it being Google product and it works well with Google Drive, Google Photos, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google everything else. Some features that are supposed to be working don't wok, though. For instance, the video call or voice call via Hangouts never worked for us. If one of us is somewhere an Internet connection is spotty (for instance if one of us is at HomeDepot), the call feature never works, but sending photos and message is timely and reliable. Actually I find this way of communicating more prompt and reliable than texting or emailing.
  • Sending photos and any photos shared through Hangouts is put on Google Photos - so convenient.
  • Works with all Google products, Google everything - Google docs, Google photos, everything in Google Drive.
  • Communication is prompt, without lagging.
  • It can be used on not just mobile devices, but also you can use it from a desktop, which is so great for typing fast.
  • Voice call feature needs improvement. I don't even know why it's there, as it never worked for us.
  • I could use more stickers, what they have already is nice and cute and cool, but if I could install more stickers (paid ones) for a few bucks that's cool.
  • I want Hangout to keep all communications saved somewhere, so I can go back to it later on.
  • I can search by keyword from Gmail, but it would be nice if there was a search feature within Hangouts, For instance, if I am looking for the messages that talked about plumbing, it would be nice if I could put "plumbing" in the hangout search. That would be helpful. Right now I have to use search on Gmail, and the search results don't quite lead to the exact spot of the communication.
This is a good app for communicating with family and friends as well as for work related purposes. This is great for heavy Google product users (like Google drive, Gmail, etc). Those who don't use Gmail, who have Gmail accounts but hardly use it, may not find it useful since you need to be logged into a Google account at all times in order to get prompt communication.
